Trip to Brussels and Belgium

We are planning on spending a bit of time in Belgium on our way to Paris. We need some advice on the amount of time worth spending in Brussels along with day trips. Our current thinking is to use Brussels as a home base and spend a total of 4 or 5 days there. Of that time, we would take a day trip to Bruges and another day trip to Antwerp. Is there any other day trip that we should add or consider? Ghent? Is 2 total days just in the city of Brussels ok, or would we be cutting it short? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Like anywhere else, you could spend longer here, or you could spend less time if you have other priorities! If you are here in the summer (or at least when the weather is fine) it would be nice to go to Dinant or Namur for the citadel and view of the river Meuse. Ieper/Ypres is another interesting destination, especially for the In Flanders Fields museum, if you have any interest in WWI. Ghent is indeed another possibility, some (although none of my visitors) prefer it to Brugge. On the other hand, some people find a day in Brussels, largely focused on the Grand%26#39; Place, and a day in Brugge to be quite enough for them, especially when they are also spending time elsewhere. I think you will have to read up on destinations, e.g. in tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g188634-Activiti… and decide what interests you.

Hi ,

Two days for Brussels is enough to get a good taste of the city if you focus on the areas surrounding the Grand Place and the Grand Sablon. A day trip to Brugge (Bruges in French), is worth a visit. Ghent has an interesting castle but I would only spend 1/2 a day there. Antwerp has nice dining, an interesting zoo and the Peter Paul Reubens house/museum which is worth a look.

I would skip Namur etc. unless you have a car. The trains go there but it is a better experience with a car as you can get to the areas where hiking is very good.

Besides Paris you are also within a train ride of Amsterdam (3 hrs.) If you have never been there, you could easily spend 2-3 days exploring the museums and canals. I don%26#39;t know when you are arriving but if you are coming late this year you might be in luck with the high speed connection to Amsterdam (they are finishing the tracks currently). If the connection is completed it should take only an hour or so to get there.

Thanks for everyone%26#39;s feedback! It is helpful!
